Lightworks Download
Lightworks Download: What You Get, What You Don't, and How to Install It
The lightworks download is free, perpetual, and available for Lightworks on Windows, macOS, and Linux — but there's a registration wall before you reach the installer.
This is not a hobbyist toy. The NLE carries genuine film credits: Pulp Fiction, Mission Impossible, The King's Speech. Developed by Lightworks Inc. (formerly EditShare), the free tier gives you a full multicam timeline, real-time effects, and a track-based interface that mirrors broadcast editing suites. The cap is H.264/H.265 export at 1080p maximum. If you need 4K output, that requires a paid Pro upgrade.

Before You Install: Account Setup and System Requirements
The Registration Step Nobody Mentions
First-time users consistently get tripped up here. Before any installer appears, the site requires a free account. Create it, verify your email, log in — then the download becomes accessible. Skipping that step sends you in circles.
The Windows .exe runs approximately 180 MB. macOS delivers a .dmg. Linux users get a self-extracting .run file executed from terminal with bash permissions — not a distro package manager entry, which keeps versioning clean but means manual updates going forward.
Minimum Specs
A 2 GHz quad-core CPU, 3 GB RAM (8 GB recommended), and a DirectX 11-compatible GPU on Windows 10/11 64 bit systems are the floor. macOS requires 10.14.6 or later; on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3), the build runs under Rosetta 2. A native ARM version has been discussed but was not shipping as of recent releases. Ubuntu 18.04+ is supported on Linux.
No reboot required post-install on any platform. First launch prompts an online license activation — without it, the software runs in a restricted demo mode.

Is It Safe? Installer Integrity and Privacy
Signed, Checksummed, Clean
The installer is digitally signed by Lightworks Inc. on both Windows and macOS. SHA-256 checksums are published alongside each release on the official download page. Worth checking before you run anything.
No adware. No bundled third-party tools. No background update services or auto-update daemons — updates are fully manual, which IT-managed machines will appreciate. The only outbound call is a basic license validation ping to Lightworks servers. It does not access project media outside directories you specify. No tracker. No bundle.
The free license is perpetual, not time-limited. That distinction matters: free tier software licensing here does not expire and does not degrade into a nag screen after 30 days.

Editing Capabilities in the Free Tier
Timeline, Codecs, and Color
The Lightworks NLE editor handles a proper track-based timeline with keyframe support, multicam sync, and real-time preview — no proxy required for moderate-resolution footage, though proxy workflows are available for heavier H.265 or RAW imports. Clip trimming, audio track mixing, transitions, and LUT-based Lightworks color grading are all present in the free build. Lightworks export settings and format options can be worth reviewing before you commit to a delivery format, since codec choices affect bitrate, render time, and compatibility downstream.
Cross-platform parity is genuinely strong. A sequence started on desktop video editing software on Windows opens cleanly on Linux without conversion. Same project file format across all three OSes.

Free vs. Pro: The Real Difference
The free tier handles 1080p H.264/H.265 export and delivers the full editing toolkit. Pro adds 4K (and beyond) export, additional format support, and priority support. For most independent creators and documentary editors, the free version covers the entire edit-through-deliver pipeline.
Compared to DaVinci Resolve's free tier, Lightworks free download gives you a more broadcast-familiar interface but a stricter export ceiling. Resolve's free build allows 4K H.265 output. That's a meaningful gap if your deliverable is 4K.
The second lightworks download entry point — the Linux .run installer — is the one most forum posts overlook. It works well; it just demands the terminal step.
